What Brunswick thinks about communal bins...

As the Council isn't asking residents their views on communal bins, I thought I'd better. During July and August I put out a short survey to the roads being proposed for the scheme. Here is how they replied plus their comments. Communal bins are a marmite issue - residents love or hate them. The running theme throughout the response is the dire lack of consultation by the Council.

The results are divided by road are as follows:

Against; For; Unsure

Brunswick Place South 6; 0; 1
Brunswick Square 61; 32; 3
Brunswick Terrace 34; 20; 3
Adelaide Crescent 35; 7; 1
Palmeira Square 38; 2; 0
Adelaide Mansions 6; 1; 0
Holland Road (not flats) 13; 25; 1
Alice Street/Close 4; 1; 1
St John’s Road 15; 17; 0
Upper Market Street 2; 23; 0
Lower Market Street 1; 24; 1
Rochester Gardens (not flats) 6; 8; 0
Palmeira Avenue 18; 27;1
Brunswick Street East 4; 17; 2
Palmeira Mansions 8; 6; 0
Brunswick Street West 12; 2;0
Norfolk Road (west) 19; 18; 1
Salisbury Road (not flats) 16; 27; 0
First Ave 12; 20; 1
Second Ave (east) 6; 19; 1
Wilbury Road (east) 21; 13; 2
Selborne Road 29; 28; 1
No road named/Anon 13; 24; 0

The key issues raised against were that the bins:

-Attract flytipping/dumping
-Smell/dirt
-Noise emptying
-Loss of parking spaces in an area where pressure is already high
-Conservation area and impact on world class historic terraces/listed buildings
-Unattractive in tourist/seafront areas
-Noise from lids in the wind
-Streets too narrow
-Majority of residents against change
-No council consultation
-They do not encourage recycling
-Not wanted directly outside homes/windows
-Loss of twice weekly/weekly collections
-There is not currently a problem
-The current bin areas would be lost/fall into disuse, should the scheme ever be reversed

The key issues raised in favour were:

-End black sacks/seagull problems
-Convenient
-Clean-up basement areas
-Sort out waste issue
-Encourage recycling
-They work elsewhere
